This is for big John from Sonora, Texas. Murdered by unknown assailants in the 1930s for being a black man having a suspected relationship with a white woman in town. Against all odds, my great grandfather, Granville Barker and big John were best friends; they worked as a barber and shoeshine boy respectively. One day John did not come in to work. After looking for John for several days, his body was found in the devils river. Turns out, the woman actually wasn’t pregnant and the majority of the story was made up. This is for John. The ghost of the desert.
